Exhibits to Visit:
“Inside the Looking Lens: The Art and Science of Photography” (Saturday, January 19 – Sunday, July 28, 2002)

This is an exciting hands-on exhibit in which children can learn how a camera works and imprints images on film. Children are invited to explore cameras of the past and present.

“Our Watershed”
(Available when not traveling)
The Watershed is an introductory exhibit for the exploration of the history, characteristics, uses and misuses of the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo. It is intended to help students and family visitors make a personal connection with the river and be empowered through education and awareness to care for it.

Available Workshops:

Water Bottle Rockets
Tuesday, June 4th & Tuesday, July 30th from 10 a.m. – 12 noon

Students will add the essentials to the bottle-like fins and cones, use their creative imagination to accentuate it, then proceed outside to launch it. Every participant gets one chance to launch his/her rocket. Participants must bring an empty 2 liter bottle in order to build their rocket.

“RioScape Scavenger Hunt”
Friday, June 7th, Friday, June 28th & Friday, July 19th from 10-11 a.m.
Children will be given a map of RioScape and clues to decode a secret message. This is a fun and educational way to explore RioScape.

“Photographing our Nature”
Saturday, June 8th & Saturday, July, 20th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon for ages 6 years- 8 years and from 1- 3 p.m. for ages 9 years and up.
Ruth Hoyt, a professional photographer/instructor will teach a basic photography class for children ages 6-14. All children are required to bring a camera with film already placed inside (may use a disposable camera). Children will enjoy a slide show and will be able to take pictures outside with the instructor’s guidance.

Movies at the Museum
Children will enjoy a movie and can purchase a drink and popcorn. All features will coincide with our exhibit schedule.

Buzzy Africanized, Honey & Killer Bees
Wednesday, June 12th 10-12 p.m. & Thursday July 25th 10-12 p.m.

Research Entomologist, William Rubink, PhD will be teaching this interesting workshop about bees. Children will explore a variety of Africanized, Honey and Killer bees. This workshop is for ages 6 and up.

Native American Indian/Cowboy Storytelling
Wednesday, June 19th & Tuesday, July 23rd 11-12 p.m.

Anabeth Cadena from the “South Texas Indian Dancers” will be sharing stories. This is a great workshop for children of all ages.

Working at the Zoo
Saturday, June 22nd & Saturday, July 13th 10-11:30 a.m.

Come and meet some special zoo friends. Sergio Garcia from the Gladys Porter Zoo will discuss what it’s like to work at the Zoo. Enjoy a video and stay for fun filled activities.

Fire Safety
Tuesday, June 25th & Wednesday, July 10th 10-11 a.m.

Firefighters with the McAllen Fire Department will discuss fire prevention and general fire safety. Children won’t want to miss this fun and informative workshop.

Fun Under the Microscope
Wednesday, June 26th & Wednesday, July 24th

J.R. Garcia, Science and Outreach Educator with the museum will teach children the fundamentals of the microscope. Children will be encouraged to explore different specimens and evaluate what they see through the microscope. This is and exciting lab exploration workshop for children ages 6 and up.

Art Bingo
Thursday, June 27th & Wednesday, July 17th 3-4 p.m.

Children will be exposed to the many genres of art. They will learn about important artists of the times in an exciting and fun way. Prizes will be given to the winners.
