Making A Mark
An exhibit of art by children touched by cancer
The McAllen International Museum and Texas Children’s Cancer Center’s Arts In Medicine Program is pleased to present the 10th annual Making A Mark: An Exhibit of Art by Children Touched by Cancer. This unique display features the works of young artists whose lives have been touched by cancer or related blood disorders and provides a focus on the personal issues that surround childhood cancer, as expressed by the children themselves.
Making A Mark is open to children from all treatment centers and attracted submissions from around the world. To highlight Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and to honor the opening of The Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children’s Cancer and Hematology Clinic, the Museum is proud bring this exhibit to the Rio Grande Valley. Young artists are the stars of Making A Mark not just for their art but also for the example of courage and love they set for all.
A panel of nine judges, representing the arts, the business community and Texas Children’s Cancer Center patients, selected “blue ribbon” pieces of art they felt most effectively represented Childhood Cancer Awareness month in the following age groups: 2-7; 8-10; and 11+. These form the center of this moving exhibition that includes two and three-dimensional art as well as poetry. These young artists are from various countries and backgrounds, living as far away as Greece and as close as Corpus Christi.
This special exhibition coincides with the opening of the new Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children’s Cancer and Hematology Clinic in McAllen, Texas. The clinic is the result of the partnership of The Vannie E. Cook Jr. Cancer Foundation, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital who joined forces to provide the children and adolescents of South Texas access to the finest oncology and hematology care available.
The mission of this partnership includes the establishment of a pediatric cancer and hematology clinic and cancer genetics clinic at the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Cancer Center Building. In addition, the partnership plans to establish a Childhood Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Program to serve our area.
The McAllen International Museum is proud to bring this moving exhibit to the Rio Grande Valley. It opens Saturday, April 21st and runs through Sunday, July 22nd, 2001.
